How It Works

Upon joining the Nutrisystem program, you'll select an appropriate meal plan based on your age, health status and activity level. After selecting your program, you will choose meals, desserts and snacks from more than 100 options. Once you select your foods, Nutrisystem will deliver 28 days worth of meals and snacks. Each day, you'll supplement these Nutrisystem selections with fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, healthy fats, lean protein and healthy carbohydrates. The meal planning guide you receive with your shipment will recommended portion sizes for the fresh grocery items.

Breakfast

On the Nutrisystem diet plan, breakfast includes a Nutrisystem breakfast entrée, one serving of fruit and one serving of milk or protein. Male dieters should also include one carbohydrate serving. The breakfast entrees offered by the program include oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, muffins, pancakes, breakfast burritos, omelets and egg dishes. When substituting your own breakfast entrée, choose options that feature whole grains and low amounts of sugar, if any. When making eggs, using only egg whites.

Lunch

Although filling, the Nutrisystem lunch features small portions and plenty of fiber to keep you full until dinner. If you prefer a hearty lunch, you might choose soup, pasta, potatoes, pizza, sandwiches or beans and rice. For a lighter option, the program offers salads and meal replacement bars. If you are substituting your own lunch entrée, keep it between 150 and 200 calories with a focus on whole grain carbohydrates, fiber and protein. Along with your main lunch entrée, treat yourself to one serving of milk or protein and a salad with plenty of vegetables and low-fat salad dressing. Male dieters can also include one carbohydrate at lunch.

Dinner

Although the servings might not be as large as what you're used to eating, the Nutrisystem dinner entrees feature larger portions than provide roughly 300 calories. The program offers a wide variety of dinner entrees, from Asian-inspired meals to hearty soup, chili and stew. Additional options include pasta, chicken dishes, burgers, beef, pizza, meatloaf, tortilla wraps and steak. A dinner substitute should remain around 300 calories with an emphasis on lean protein. Along with your entrée, enjoy two servings of vegetables with butter or salad dressing and one serving of salad or fresh fruit. As with the other meals, male dieters can also include one carbohydrate at dinner.
