The maple syrup cleanse, also known as The Master Cleanse, appeals to many people who search for holistic means to reinvigorate their health and shed pounds. The diet consists of a rigorous 10-day liquid fast. As side effects are possible, be sure to consult a physician prior to embarking on the this cleansing regimen.

Ingredients

The maple syrup detox diet includes four main ingredients used to make "lemonade": grade B maple syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, cayenne pepper powder, and distilled, spring or filtered water. You also need non-iodized sea salt for the "salt water flush," as well as some laxatives such as senna-containing herbal laxative teas. Whenever possible, use organic ingredients for maximum benefits.

Liquid Fast

The liquid fast of the maple syrup cleanse lasts for 10 consecutive days -- this means abstaining from all solid foods. Each day begins with a morning "salt water flush" that flushes out the toxins, and you consume multiple glasses of "lemonade" and water throughout the day to loosen up internal waste and release trapped toxins. A cup of laxative tea completes the daily regimen to aid with the elimination process.

Breaking the Fast

While you may be tempted to eat a hefty meal upon completing the fast, nutritionist Peter Glickman suggests to start with fruit juice and vegetable soup. Gradually adding fruits and vegetables, followed by grains and then other foods over a period of several days allows the body to properly readjust to solid food digestion.

Risks and Benefits

Glickman warns that strong cravings, low blood sugar, fatigue, irritability, headaches, other aches and pains, nausea and vomiting could occur during the detox fast. If you take any medications that should be taken with food, consult with your doctor to see if you need to make adjustments to the duration of the cleanse. This fast may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions, and its benefits have not been proven in clinical studies.

Some people report feeling invigorated, re-energized, mentally clearer and physically lighter following the fast. Expect to lose some weight, but keep in mind that this loss may not be sustainable once you resume your normal diet.
