Medifast diet plans for men, women and diabetics use Medifast products and a fresh meal called the Lean and Green meal. You eat one Lean and Green meal per day throughout your weight loss journey and transition to weight maintenance. Medifast is a low-calorie diet for rapid weight loss of 2 to 5 lbs. per week, and you should only start the diet with your doctor's approval.
5 & 1 Plan Overview
The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan provides a daily diet with about 80 to 85 g of carbohydrates and 850 calories from five prepared Medifast meals or snacks that you purchase, plus one Lean and Green meal. The Lean and Green meal is made with high-protein foods and vegetables that you prepare for yourself. You can have up to three servings of condiments, such as 1 tsp. soy sauce or vinegar, 2 tsp. lime juice or 2 tbsp. yellow mustard or salsa. You can also have a snack like three celery stalks or two dill pickle spears.
Medifast Foods
You can choose any five Medifast meals or shakes each day. The Medifast products have about 100 calories, are high in protein and dietary fiber and provide at least 20 percent of the daily value for most vitamins and essential minerals. Choices include scrambled eggs, pretzels, oatmeal, pudding, soup and Medifast shakes. Some Medifast shakes are designed for certain health benefits. For example, there are Medifast shakes for coronary health, with extra soy protein; Medifast shakes for joint health, with glucosamine and chondroitin to decrease joint pain; and Medifast shakes for appetite suppression, with caffeine.
Lean Foods
Your Lean and Green meal should include some protein and fat. You can have 7 oz. of protein from the list of "leanest" choices, which include cod, flounder, shrimp, elk, extra lean ground turkey and egg whites. "Leaner" choices can be 6 oz. of trout, halibut, skinless chicken breast or tofu; "lean" choices include 5 oz. of salmon, herring, lean steak, pork chop or dark meat chicken. A serving of healthy fats might be five olives, 1 tsp. olive or flaxseed oil or 2 tbsp. of low-carbohydrate salad dressing, and you can have one serving if you choose a leaner protein, and two servings if you have a leanest protein.
Green Foods
On the Medifast plan, you can eat any combination of three servings of green foods, which are vegetables, with your Lean and Green meal. A serving of low-carbohydrate vegetables is 1 cup of raw greens, such as romaine or green leaf lettuce, spinach, collards or endive, or one-half cup of cucumber, mushrooms, Swiss chard or sprouts. Moderate-carbohydrate vegetables include 1/2 cup of asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage or zucchini. Higher-carbohydrate examples are 1/2 cup of broccoli, tomatoes, spaghetti squash and green beans.
