When gymnast Joseph Pilates began to develop the exercise regimen that would become his namesake, he also developed the tools. The techniques of Pilates, which in its purest form is done on a mat similar to one used in yoga, are difficult for a beginning practitioner. The reformer was designed by Joseph Pilates to prepare his students for mat work. But purchasing a reformer is a major investment for a home practitioner, so consider your options and a reformer's features.
Stamina AeroPilates Pro XP 556
The XP 556, manufactured by Stamina AeroPilates, is the top-selling Pilates reformer, according to Amazon. Pilates Gym Reviews says, "All reviewers are thoroughly impressed with this Pilates exercise equipment due to its high-quality performance and durability." The machine's most noted area involves abdominal exercises. At $899.99, as of March 2011, it is considered an entry-level reformer.
Pilates Power Gym
This Pilates reformer is the smallest, lightest and among the most cost-efficient. Exercise Equipment Review says the PPG "appears simple in design, [but] the Pilates Power Gym offers a significant number of exercises for a variety of fitness levels and sizes." The reformer retails for $349, as of March 2011, and is suited best for practitioners requiring its space-saving size and affordability.
Stott Pilates at Home SPX
While the Stott SPX is the most expensive of the group, retailing between $2,995 and $2,532, as of March 2011, it is also virtually identical to the models a practitioner might find in a gym or studio. "This professional-grade Pilates machine allows you to perform over 250 Pilates gym workouts at home," says Pilates Gym Reviews. It is heavier than the other models and built to withstand continuous and repeated use.
