A weight loss camp can make it easier to focus on learning and practicing the skills you need in order to affect lasting weight loss. At a weight loss camp, you'll learn from trained professionals and share your challenges and successes with fellow campers. No longer just "fat camps" for kids, weight loss camps can help adults who want to lose weight too. There are many well-respected camps located throughout the United States.
Camp Jump Start
Camp Jump Start serves adults and children as young as 9, as well as returning campers who have maintained their weight loss. In April 2010, the journal "Pediatrics" reported the results of a study on 76 children between the ages of 10 and 18 who participated in four- or eight-week programs at Camp Jump Start. All children participating in the program had statistically significant reductions in weight, BMI and systolic blood pressure, with children in the eight-week program demonstrating greater reductions.
Camp Shane
Camp Shane has programs for boys ages 7 to 19, girls ages 7 to 17 and young women ages 18 to 25. Camp Shane also offers programs for young adults in a resort setting. Several TV shows, including "TLC" and "The Dr. Phil Show" have aired feature segments on Camp Shane, which offers a follow-up program to continue to support a healthier lifestyle, including nutrition and fitness newsletters, and referrals to local nutritionists.
Green Mountain at Fox Run
Green Mountain at Fox Run has been offering healthy lifestyle camping retreat programs to women for over 40 years. Special tracks address a variety of medical conditions, including binge eating, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Nutrition education is a trademarked "Normal Eating Restructuring Program." They also offer fitness classes that can be modified based on personal fitness levels and medical needs, as well as workshops on emotional eating, stress management and body image.
Wellspring Camps
Featured in the TV show "Too Fat for 15," Wellspring Camps offer a program focused on long-term results. Workshops at the end of each camp session teach family members how to support ongoing weight loss and healthy choices in the home environment. Wellspring's Continuing Care program provides ongoing contact between campers and behavioral coaches for one year. Campers who successfully complete the Continuing Care program receive a financial award.
