The healthiest diets for weight loss are diets that minimize the intake of saturated fats and trans fats and include sufficient amounts of fiber, protein and essential nutrients. Diets that satisfy these criteria include a modified version of the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet, the Paleo diet and the raw diet. They are all effective weight-loss diets, mainly because they increase the intake of foods that stay in the digestive system longer. This can prevent hunger and promote weight loss.
The Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet, as originally devised by Dr. Robert Atkins, consisted in cutting the carbohydrate intake down to 20 g a day in the beginning. What else you ate didn't matter. The diet was effective as a weight-loss diet. Carbohydrates break down fast in the digestive system, which gives rise to a peak in blood sugar followed by a rapid drop. This quick drop in blood sugar is the main cause of hunger pangs. When most of your diet consists of protein and fat, your blood sugar remains more stable. So, if you feel hungry, the feeling is less extreme and does not tend to make your overeat.
A Healthier Version of the Atkins Diet
The original version of the Atkins diet has several health risks. The American Heart Association states that it can lead to cardiovascular disease. There is also a risk of not getting enough vitamins and minerals. You can, however, follow the Atkins diet and eat healthy food. Replace fatty meat with soy products such as tofu, lean meats and poultry and fatty fish, such as tuna, salmon and sardines. To get enough fiber, ensure that at least half of the 20 g of carbohydrates come from legumes and vegetables rich in fiber. Finally, take a daily vitamin and mineral supplement.
The South Beach Diet
In the wake of the buzz surrounding the Atkins diet, other low-carb diets were inspired. Cardiologist Arthur Agatston devised a diet that has come to be known as the South Beach diet. The diet was not marketed as a low-carb diet but rather as a healthier alternative to Atkins' diet. The principles behind the South Beach diet are similar to those behind the Atkins diet. Some foods convert more easily into glucose than others. By avoiding foods that convert into glucose very rapidly, you will avoid wild fluctuations in your blood sugar, which will control your appetite. The South Beach diet differs from the Atkins diet in allowing fiber-rich complex carbohydrates. It also encourages replacing bad fats with good fats. Foods that are excluded include white bread, white rice, regular pasta and sugar.
The Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet is based on the principle that we should eat approximately what our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate for two million years during the Paleolithic era. Our digestive system evolved to process the foods our ancestors ate. While our ancestors prepared their food, they did not eat food from agriculture. So, dairy products and foods that contain grains or seeds from man-made fields are prohibited on the diet. Paleo dieters eat large quantifies of lean meats, wild game, fish, seeds, roots, vegetables and fruits. The Paleo diet is overall healthy but dairy products are one of the main sources of calcium. So, a calcium deficit disorder can occur. To prevent that, supplement with large quantifies of vegetables high in calcium, such as spinach.
The Raw Diet
The raw diet prohibits cooked foods on the grounds that cooking breaks down essential enzymes and nutrients. Food can be prepared and warmed but the temperature must stay below 115 degrees F. Lots of foods can be prepared by using a blender or a dehydrator that blows air on the food to dry it out. Many foods are eaten unprepared, including meats, fish, raw milk, vegetables and fruits. Legumes are prepared by allowing them to sprout. The raw diet is a healthy diet, because the raw food provides large quantities of vitamins, minerals and fiber.
