Side Effects of Accutane

Isotretinoin, most commonly known as Accutane, is used to treat painful nodular acne, usually after other medications have been tried without success. Accutane can also be used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, rosacea, sweat gland problems and other skin disorders. The medication should not be used by pregnant women or women trying to become pregnant.

Serious Side Effects

Some patients have reported pain in their joints or trouble walking or running when taking Accutane, according to the Mayo Clinic. If this occurs, see your physician. You should also contact your physician if you experience a rash or irritation on and around the lips. Although rare, if you have bleeding of the gums or rectum, severe abdominal pain and nausea or notice any negative behavior changes, you should contact your physician or visit an emergency room immediately.

Common Side Effects

There are many common side effects that may appear when you first begin taking Accutane. These include changes in skin sensitivity and dryness in your eyes, mouth and nose, according to the Mayo Clinic. In addition, many patients experience peeling and irritated skin. These side effects are a result of your body getting used to the medication, but if they persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Other possible side effects associated with Accutane include changes in menstruation, changes in skin color and temperature, a feeling of exhaustion for no reason, changes in voice and hair growth on the face, according to the Mayo Clinic. The incidence of these effects is not known but if you experience any, you should notify your physician.
