Without a bit of guidance, you might feel lost in a sea of confusion. Having a few tips to follow might help to get your diet on the right path.
Stop Drinking High Calorie Beverages
Your body often confuses hunger for thirst, so it is important to give it the right beverage. Water or other calorie-free drinks are the best options. If you love soda, it's time to break the habit. Depending on the size of the soda you drink in one sitting, you can reduce your caloric intake by as much as 360 calories. If plain water is unappealing, flavor it with a splash of lemon or lime.
Think About Adding, Not Subtracting
Many people view dieting as deprivation, but this perspective sets you up for failure before you begin. Obviously, candy, cakes and cookies don't help you lose weight, however, you can still enjoy your potatoes and steak in moderation. At the same time, though, think about the healthy food you can add to these items to make your diet a healthy one. What vegetables and fruits do you like? Can you replace red meat with fish once or twice a week? Adding these foods increases your success rate.
Indulge Once a Day
Give into your cravings once a day to prevent feeling deprived, which can lead to overindulging. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends eating your favorite once a day, but do so in moderation. Keep it between 100 and 200 calories.
Eat Mini-Meals
You must burn more calories than you consume, but this can be difficult when you eat every time you are hungry. You can prevent this by eating five or six mini-meals through the day. This stabilizes your blood sugar levels, stopping hunger from taking control of your body. Your energy levels remain high and your metabolism runs constantly. If you follow a 1,400 calories diet, divide this by five. This is the number of calories each meal should contain.
Eat Smaller Portions
Reducing your portion sizes can make a tremendous difference. Do this by using a salad plate for meals or ordering off the children's menu at a restaurant. It's easy to trick your mind into believing you are eating the same amount by filling a smaller plate. This cuts down on calories, too.
