Essential oils are squeezed from herbs, flowers, plants and vegetables and used in aromatherapy for inhaling or rubbed directly on the skin. Oils from foods, such as grapefruit, are taken internally as well. According to the National Cancer Institute, essential oils are used for emotional, spiritual and physical healing. Most oils, such as grapefruit oil, do not have side effects although they are not monitored by a federal agency. While safe for most people, you should talk to your doctor before using grapefruit essential oil, especially if you are pregnant or undergoing treatment for a medical condition.
Increase Immunity
The essential oil from grapefruit comes from its peel. The entire grapefruit is known for its antioxidant properties and includes the oil extracted from the outer layer. High in vitamin C, the oil of the fruit provides your system with components that fight free radicals that get in the body primarily from environmental pollution. Antioxidants are useful for fighting the signs of aging in the skin, cells, muscles, eyes and ears.
Skin Care
Acidic fruits, such as grapefruit, dry out the skin and can be particularly useful if you have trouble with acne. Grapefruit oil applied to the face dries out the excess oil that causes pimples and shrinks pores to prevent dirt and dead skin cells from forming blackheads and whiteheads. The oil from grapefruit may sting a little when applied to fresh skin, but it also leaves a tingling, fresh feeling.
Disinfectant
The properties in grapefruit oil fight both viral and bacterial germs both inside and outside the body. Used externally, the oil is used to treat skin infections and sores in your mouth. Taken internally, grapefruit oil may relieve colon or stomach infections, kidney, excretory and urinary infections.
Diuretic
Like the fruit from which it comes, grapefruit oil can work as a diuretic to help with inflammation. Dieters often use grapefruit oil to help with weight loss. Grapefruit oil helps eliminate excess water as well as toxins that may settle in the liver and kidneys. By promoting urination, the oil boosts fat, water, uric acid and sodium loss.
Reactions
Grapefruit and its essential oils can interfere with various medications and cause adverse reactions. According to MayoClinic.com, the chemicals in grapefruit and other citrus fruits affect the enzymes needed to break down or metabolize the medicines in your digestive system. Medications that may cause complications when coupled with grapefruit products include those used to treat blood pressure, depression, anxiety, seizures and arrhythmia.
