Astragalus, a bushy, perennial plant, is also called milk vetch, locoweed and green dragon. As a member of the pea family, it's considered a legume. Astragalus has been used for centuries dating back to ancient China, and is native to the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. The plant's long, thick root is harvested for herbal preparations after it has grown for at least four years. Astragalus is used most often to enhance immune system function. Consult your doctor before taking astragalus supplements.

Therapeutic Use

There are a number of different species of astragalus, but Astragalus membranaceus is the only kind used for medicinal purposes. Traditionally, astragalus has been known to improve the workings of the immune system to protect the body against infection. It is classified as an adaptogenic herb that helps protect the cells against physical and emotional stressors. Astragalus functions as an antioxidant against cellular damage from free radicals and as an antiviral, particularly against viruses that cause cold and flu. The herb also appears to have some properties that are beneficial for the heart.

Immune System

Astragalus is probably best known as an herbal treatment to boost the immune system. Astragalus contains a number of flavonoid and polysaccharide substances, believed to be responsible for many of its medicinal properties. It is a strong antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage by free radicals. Astragalus also has antiviral activity, accounting for it use in reducing the duration of cold and flu. Astragalus appears to enhance some immune functions while suppressing others. Astragalus may help increase your body's production of interferon while assisting macrophages in removing viruses.

Benefits to Cancer Patients

Astragalus is also used to improve immune function in patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer. The American Cancer Society states that more studies are needed, but some show astragalus may work by enhancing the effects of certain chemotherapy medications. This allows some cancer patients to take lower doses of certain chemotherapy drugs, such as cisplatin and interleukin-2. Astragalus can help reduce the incidence of harsh side effects, acting to improve the appetite and lessen the incidence of night sweats, weakness and diarrhea.

Heart Disease

Herbal supplements containing astragalus appear to improve circulation following a heart attack. The plant's antioxidant properties may help improve heart function and lower blood pressure. Additionally, astragalus works to decrease clotting, allowing the blood to circulate more freely. Astragalus can be as effective as aspirin in reducing the formation of blood clots post-heart attack. It also possesses mild diuretic properties that may account for its ability to lower blood pressure. Only take astragalus under your doctor's supervision, as it can affect your other medications and supplements.
