Rose hips are the seeded fruit of a perennial plant. They have been used as vitamin supplements and as a diuretic and laxative. Although rose hips may offer some benefits for use during pregnancy, the safety of the plant is largely unknown. It is important to understand how to consume rose hips safely with the permission and supervision of your doctor.

Benefits

You need 85mg of vitamin C a day during pregnancy, and Drugs.com states that rose hips contain 0.5 to 1.7 percent vitamin C. During pregnancy, vitamin C assists bone growth and tissue repair and also helps boost the immune system. Rose hips are also a source of vitamin A, vitamin B2 and vitamin K.

Safety

Drinking herbal tea made from rose hips is likely safe in small amounts. However, drinking excessive amounts of rose hips or any other type of herbal tea can be dangerous. The American Pregnancy Association states that there is a lack of evidence that can determine if rose hips are safe to use during pregnancy.

Considerations

There are no dosage recommendations for rose hips. If your doctor recommends that you use rose hips for any reason during pregnancy, follow his dosing recommendations carefully. The dosage amount may vary according to how the herbal supplement is packaged. For example, rose hips are commercially available dried and as a tincture.

Recommendations

If you plan to talk to your doctor about consuming rose hips as a natural way to get vitamin C in your diet, consider eating other food sources that are rich in vitamin C. Citrus fruits and vegetables like broccoli and spinach are richer sources of the vitamin and are safe to consume.
