Depression is a mental and physical condition that can lead to a loss of motivation, fatigue, appetite loss or gain, sleeping difficulties and a general feeling of worthlessness. Anxiety occurs as worry, fatigue, irritability, stomach upset and fatigue. Some people may use herbal remedies to help treat, relieve and control symptoms of these two conditions. You should always consult a doctor before taking herbal remedies. Never replace other forms of treatment with herbal treatments.

Kava Kava For Anxiety

An herb that has been used to help anxiety is kava kava. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) advises that a dose of 100 to 200 mg, two to four times per day, may effectively help reduce anxiety. But, the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, warns that kava may result in liver damage in rare incidences. Therefore, you should consult your doctor before taking this herb to see if it can be effective and safe for you.

Valerian

Valerian is another herb that may help treat anxiety. This herb, taken at 150 mg, two to three times a day, may be helpful in treating both anxiety and insomnia, according to UMMC. Research has revealed mixed results and more research is needed. You should consult your doctor before taking this herb because it can interact with other drugs, including antihistamines, narcotics and antidepressants. Valerian may also lead to liver problems, or cause problems for women who are are pregnant or nursing.

St.John's Wort

Another herb that has been used to treat conditions such as anxiety and depression is St.John's Wort. Some studies have shown that this herb can treat depression that is mild to moderate. Research studies have been mixed, and more are required to establish a clear benefit, according the the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This herb can interact with certain medications, including birth control pills, heart medications and antidepressants. You should talk to your doctor before taking.

Lavender

Lavender may effectively help treat stress and anxiety, including common symptoms such as hair loss and insomnia. Lavender in the form of aromatherapy may help improve your sleep, mood and level of relaxation, according to UMMC. It may also help relax your nervous system activity, which is often stimulated during anxiety, leading to anxiety and a feeling of restlessness. Other ways to use this herb include as a bath gel, lotion, soap, tea or oil.
