An elliptical machine is a mix of a treadmill and stair climber. Much of the elliptical's popularity stems from the minimal stress on the joints during a workout. Exercising with an elliptical provides less stress on the hips, knees and back, unlike working out on a treadmill.
Weight Management
Elliptical trainers can help you manage your weight by burning calories. According to the American Council on Exercise, exercising on an elliptical trainer burns about 8 to 9 calories per minute. "Oxygen" magazine says faster results can be gained by mixing up your cardio sessions.
Improved Bone Density
Weight-bearing aerobic activity includes any workout in which your bones support your weight. Elliptical trainers provide a weight-bearing activity. The Mayo Clinic says effective weight-bearing exercise targets the bones in the legs, hips and lower spine, slowing mineral loss.
Improved Muscular Endurance
Elliptical trainers offer a low-impact cardiovascular workout. The smooth, fluid, nonjarring motion assures minimal stress while providing an upper- and lower-body workout through the dual-action use of arm handles and foot pedals. This dual action targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, back, chest, biceps and triceps, increasing their muscular endurance.
Improved Aerobic Capacity
During the repeated use of large muscle groups, your respiratory rate increases and breathing becomes deeper. According to the Mayo Clinic, this allows a maximum amount of oxygen to enter your blood. Your heart begins to beat faster, allowing increased blood flow to the working muscles. Small blood vessels expand to allow greater blood delivery and provide additional waste product removal. Regular participation in cardiovascular aerobic activity, such as elliptical training, will produce these responses more quickly and efficiently.
