Bikram yoga differs from other styles of yoga in that it is practiced in a room with a raised temperature to keep the muscles warm and flexible enough to work through a routine of challenging postures. The aim is to release toxins from the body and balance the physical and metal states. You should consult your physician if you are considering practicing Bikram yoga.

Aims

Bikram Choudhury, founder and owner of the Yoga College of India, created this style of yoga. It is similar to hatha yoga in that its aim is to purify and strengthen the physical body and its energies. Bikram uses a combination of breathing and stretching exercises, which are performed in a room where the temperature is kept around 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bikram Sessions

Bikram hot yoga sessions usually last for around 90 minutes. The session entails a routine of 26 asanas; each one is repeated twice. Although some of the asanas are quite challenging, the room temperature loosens the muscles and makes it easier to maintain the postures. In this way, Bikram improves flexibility, strengthens the spine, tones the muscles and massages the organs.

Challenges

Bikram is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Although some of the asanas can be challenging, it is important to start off gently and slowly so that you do not become discouraged. If you are trying it for the first time, begin with a 20- to 30-minute session so that you can adjust to the temperature. You should keep a bottle of water with you at all times so that you do not become dehydrated.

Health Benefits

According to experts at Bikram's Yoga College of India, hot yoga has a number of health benefits. It improves circulation, stretches and tones the muscles, improves posture and flexibility, boosts the immune system, relieves chronic pain and stress, and promotes a feeling of peace and well-being.
