Homeopathic Treatments for Migraines

Homeopathic treatments are alternative remedies, often deemed natural. In many regions of the world, qualified practitioners use homeopathy in a variety of ways to relieve pain and illness associated with various conditions. Migraine sufferers may turn to homeopathy to relieve the symptoms of migraine headaches without the use of manufactured prescriptions and pain relievers. Always talk to a medical professional before beginning any treatment.

Belladonna

Belladonna is an herb used for centuries for a range of purposes, including headache, menstrual symptoms, peptic ulcer disease, inflammation and motion sickness, according to Medline Plus. In homeopathic remedies, the herb may be diluted and used in various forms to relive the pain associated with migraine headaches. However, more studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of the herb when used without other ingredients. Side effects related to use include urinary retention, flushing, dry mouth, constipation, confusion and dilation of the pupils.

Feverfew

Feverfew, a centuries-old remedy for fevers, stomachaches, toothaches, insect bites and headaches, is derived from a perennial plant. Today, the herb is a homeopathic approach to treatment for common chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and migraine headaches, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alterative Medicine (NCCAM). The dried leaves are used to concoct supplements, tablets and liquid extracts, which are available over-the-counter at health food stores. Side effects associated with feverfew include mild symptoms like canker sores, swelling in the tongue or lips and loss of taste. Rarely, digestive problems, nausea and bloating occur.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing, used to balance opposite forces in the body (Yin and Yang), thought to affect health. Today, acupuncture practitioners are not hard to find, as the holistic treatment is a popular part of western medicine and is used to treat a host of conditions like acne, obesity, addictions and chronic conditions and illnesses (see Resources for more from the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture). With the insertion of long, slender needles placed strategically in pressure points corresponding to pain, migraine sufferers may find relief with acupuncture. The approach may work alone or in conjunction with other medications and medical interventions.
