Although birth control provides protection from unwanted pregnancies, a woman may find that a pregnancy is something that she desires. In order to achieve conception, she must first stop birth control.

What Happens?

Once you have stopped taking your birth control pills, your body will return to the way it was before you started. The hormones from the pill will start to leave your body, thus reverting back to pre-pill levels. Within a week from stopping, your ovaries will again begin to produce eggs for fertilization. Your menstrual cycle will start to become normal within a couple of months. Any normal side effects of your period will return once the hormones are gone.

Why Does It Happen?

When you stop taking the pill, the hormones from the pill will be gone from your system within a couple of days. Your body will once again start ovulation, thus making pregnancy possible.

Reasons To Stop Birth Control

Wanting to start a family is the most common reason for stopping the pill. Once you start having a normal menstrual cycle, you can safely start trying to conceive. It is also good to give your body a rest from the pill if you have been taking it for a few years.

Considerations

As always, consult with your doctor before stopping the pill. If you are stopping it because the pill is making you ill, your doctor can prescribe a different pill for you. If you are planning on trying to conceive, your doctor will be able to tell you how long to wait and when to try.

Warning

After stopping the pill, you should start having normal menstrual cycles. If you do not, you need to contact your doctor.
