Infomercials and online advertisements for colon cleansers can be convincing because advertisers make dramatic promises about detoxification and weight loss. In reality, these products aren't regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and they may actually do your body more harm than good, warns the Cleveland Clinic medical center.

Reality

Doctors sometimes recommend colon cleansing as preparation for medical procedures such as colonoscopies, but they rarely recommend it for weight loss or detoxification purposes. Increasing the number of bowel movements you have by following a colon-cleansing regimen will not result in dramatic weight loss because the body absorbs the majority of its calories before nutrients reach the colon. Avoid using a colon-cleansing product if its promises appear too good to be true.

Risks

Colon cleansing increases your risk of dehydration through processes such as increased loose bowel movements. Additionally, colon cleansing can clear healthy bacteria and important minerals such as potassium from the colon, which can lead to an imbalance or deficiency of electrolytes. You may also experience heart failure if your colon absorbs too many fluids during cleansing. The act of cleansing the colon by inserting tubes into the rectum can also lead to contamination or infection if the tubes aren't properly sterilized or utilized.

Research

Although proponents of colon cleansing weight loss regimens claim that they feel lighter and healthier after they cleanse, bear in mind that no scientific evidence proves that such procedures help detoxify the body or aid in weight loss. Your body generally has all the equipment it needs to clear out toxins and shed excess pounds; you just need to make the healthy lifestyle choices to support it.

An Alternative

Rather than investing in colon cleansing tools that aren't proven to help you lose weight, spend more time and effort eating a healthier diet rich in fruits, whole grains and vegetables. These nutrient-rich foods are typically low in calories but high in fiber, meaning they will help you feel satisfied without causing you to eat more calories than you need. Other habits that can help you lose weight and boost your health include avoiding smoking, cutting back on or avoiding alcohol, visiting your doctor for regular check-ups and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. If you need extra help losing weight, ask your doctor to refer you to a registered dietitian and certified fitness instructor. They will offer you specific pointers based on your current wants and needs.
