When you're getting ready to exercise and get sweaty, your outfit may not be high on your list of considerations. While your clothes alone won't get you fit, wearing the right gear for the season and the sport can make you feel comfortable and keep you safe and healthy during your workouts.
Dress for the Weather
If you're exercising at home or in a gym, the weather may not weigh heavily on your clothing choices, but exercising outdoors puts you at the mercy of the weather. During hot, summer months, choose light cotton clothes for slower exercises like yoga, and materials that wick water away from your skin for more intense exercises, such as running, high-impact sports or cycling. When the temperature drops, layer up so you can peel off clothes as you generate heat from exercising. Your body loses heat quickly through your hands, feet and head, so don a pair of gloves, warm socks, a scarf and a hat before heading out.
Dress For Safety
No matter where you choose to exercise, wear clothing that fits your body. Loose fabric or extraneous strings or ties can get caught up in workout equipment. If you're exercising outside, especially at night, wear bright colors with reflective panels to make you more visible to passing vehicles.
Dress For Comfort
You're more likely to exercise consistently if you're comfortable in what you're wearing. Try on clothes before purchasing them. If they're uncomfortable in the fitting room, they'll probably be even more so once you're exercising. How you feel about yourself also affects how you exercise. Wear colors and patterns that you like and that make you feel good. You'll be more motivated to hit the gym when you love what you're wearing.
Choosing Shoes
Your shoes are perhaps the most important element of your outfit to keep you safe and injury free. Look for shoes with plenty of arch support and a sturdy heel. When you begin to notice wear and tear on your shoes, it's probably time to replace them. Harvard Medical School suggests replacing your shoes at least every six months, as the cushioning tends to wear out the more you use them.
