The Master Cleanse diet created by Stanley Burroughs in the 1940s remains popular today as a weight-loss and detox program. For at least 11 days, only liquids are consumed on the regimen. Dieters subsist on a special lemonade mixture, as well as water and herbal teas for 10 days. On day 11 only orange juice and water are consumed. Gradually returning to solid foods, on day 12 dieters have fresh vegetables and fruits.

Master Cleanse Formula

Some dieters use the Master Cleanse plan for just a few days, while others follow it for two weeks or more. A serving of the lemonade mixture contains 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice, 2 tbsp. organic grade B maple syrup, 1/10 tsp. ground cayenne pepper and 8 oz. of spring, distilled or purified water. Grade B maple syrup contains more minerals than the lighter grade A syrup.

The Case for the Cleanse

Improved mental clarity, weight loss, reduced blood pressure and cholesterol are benefits of the Master Cleanse diet, notes Dr. Elson Haas, author of "The New Detox Diet." Cleansing may also benefit those with allergies, constipation, back pain or headaches. Ailments such as bronchitis and gastrointestinal problems may be remedied with a cleanse, adds Haas.

Not For Everyone

Persons with immune deficiencies, fatigue or anemia, young children and pregnant or nursing mothers should not try a liquid diet such as the Master Cleanse, according to Haas. Making dietary adjustments or taking herbal medicines are preferable ways for some people to detox, he explains.

Precautions

Watch for possible side effects with the Master Cleanse, such as dizziness, fatigue, headaches and nausea, advises nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky. Very little scientific evidence affirms that the Master Cleanse removes toxins from the body, she adds. For optimum health, Zeratsky recommends a balanced diet of lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Consult with your doctor before trying a Master Cleanse diet.
