Bouts of dizziness can stem from a variety of conditions such as viral infections, inner ear disorders, certain antibiotic medications, ear calcium deposits or fluid in the ears. Because dizziness can make it difficult to do simple daily activities such as walking, it is important to know what types of exercises can help remedy it.
Tightrope Exercise
Stand in a hallway where there are walls or a railing readily available to support yourself if you get too dizzy. Slowly walk forward, placing your heel directly in front of your toe with each step. Pretend you are balancing on a tightrope or walking on a line. Try to take at least 10 steps without using any support. Do this exercise for at least a half hour every day.
Standing Habituation Exercise
Stand on a firm surface with a wall or chair within reach if you become too dizzy. Quickly turn completely to your right. Wait for any dizziness to subside and then slowly face forward again. Repeat two more times. Switch sides, quickly spinning completely to the left. Pause again and allow dizziness to go away before returning to the starting position. Continue the exercise on the left side at least two more times.
Lying-Standing Exercise
Lie down in a comfortable position on a bed or couch. Get up off the right side of the bed, standing up as fast as possible without falling down. Pause and lie back down. Repeat for a total of five times. Lie on the opposite end of the couch or position yourself on the left side of the bed. Continue the exercise for a total of five times, exiting from the left side this time.
Floor Habituation Exercise
Sit on the floor with your back straight and stomach pulled in. Quickly lie down flat on your back, using your arms for support if necessary. Wait for dizziness to subside and then slowly lift yourself back to the starting position. Repeat two more times. Quickly lie flat again and roll yourself onto your left side this time. Wait for any symptoms to pass and then return to your back. Roll to your right side. Continue rolling to each side for a total of three times per side.
