If knowing your heart rate while you exercise is important, consider the Precor heart rate option available in some its products. Precor is a manufacturer of exercise equipment, including treadmills and elliptical machines. It offers a heart rate monitoring option that can be added to some of its equipment. The heart rate option is known as Smart Rate and is available on the EFX5.23 and the EFX5.17 exercise machines. The heart rate monitor option is designed to be used solely with Precor exercise products.

Considerations

Monitoring your heart rate is a great way to determine if your exercise regimen is meeting your fitness goals. It is also a good way to monitor your pulse so you can stay within your target rate. Precor has created a heart rate option that is activated when you wear a POLAR chest strap during a workout. Once your heart beat has been detected, it is automatically displayed on the console of the machine you are using.

Advantages

Precor USA states that its heart rate monitoring equipment is extremely sensitive. The Smart Rate and Heart Rate Features act as visual cues to help you adjust your exercise routine and intensity. The option can be used with the courses that are programmed into your exercise equipment and it makes a simple correlation between your pulse rate and level of exercise. Plus, you do not need to stop exercising to monitor your heart rate, which is a decided advantage.

How it Works

Smart Heart is an option you purchase from your Polar dealer. Your heart rate is displayed in a blinking segment on the bar graph that appears on the left of the display panel on your machine. Enter your age in set-up mode and your pulse rate will be displayed in either the weight loss or cardiovascular zones. You will also need to enter your user identification number and wear the POLAR chest strap. If you press the quick start option, your heart rate lights do not appear until the Precor banner display is complete. Once you begin to exercise, your heart rate appears next to a blinking light on the display.

Readings

If you are looking to lose weight, Polar suggests that your heart rate should be between 55 and 70 percent of your maximum aerobic heart rate. It does not advise exceeding 80 percent of your maximum rate or going above your training zone. If you exercise for 30 minutes and maintain between 70 and 80 percent of your maximum aerobic heart rate you are likely improving your cardiovascular and respiratory fitness levels. If you exercise regularly -- at least three times per week, you should see the most significant benefits.
