Pilates is an anaerobic exercise program that strengthens the core body, improves the posture and tones the muscles. Free Pilates is a basic form of Pilates that does not require any machinery or accessories other than a mat to practice on. There are different styles of Pilates mats to choose from.

Factors

Not all types of exercise mats are suitable for practicing free Pilates. Although many people think that yoga mats are suitable for Pilates, this is not the case. A good Pilates mat needs to have a thickness of at least a half inch and should be firm enough to permit some buoyancy. You should not be able to feel the floor through your Pilates mat. Another important thing to note is the size of the mat. You should be able to lie on it comfortably with room to maneuver yourself, without your feet sticking off the end or your shoulders being close to the edge. The usual size is 76 inches long and 25 inches wide.

Thickness

Extra thick Pilates mats are available for people who want the extra comfort. The extra cushioning helps prevent discomfort on the joints, particularly the spine while you are working through your exercise routines. Thick mats are at least a quarter-inch thick. Anything less and you can bruise or injure your joints while exercising.

Grip

Anther important factor to consider is grip. Your Pilates mat should be able to support your hands, arms and feet even when you have been perspiring. If it is too slick, you will not be able to maintain your posture and may injure yourself. With this in mind, some Pilates mats have a slightly sticky surface to provide friction and prevent sliding.

Cleaning

When you have selected the right Pilates mat for you and you use it on a regular basis, it is important to clean it often. This will help maintain its flexibility, cushioning and grip, as well as prevent bacteria from growing on the surface. Most quality Pilates mats are easy to clean with a damp cloth. You may also want to use an antibacterial spray.
