Thyrolar is the brand name for liotrix, a combination medication used to treat hypothyroidism. Thyrolar contains levothyroxine and liothyronine, synthetic versions of T4 and T3 thyroid hormones. Side effects with Thyrolar are the same as patients taking levothyroxine or liothyronine.
Cardiac Side Effects
Some patients taking Thyrolar have reported palpitations, chest pain, faster heart rate and increased blood pressure. This may be due to a dose of Thyrolar that is too high. It can also be related to the T3 hormone in Thyrolar. T3 is more stimulating than T4 and can cause effects similar to those seen in people using caffeine or stimulant medications. Patients noticing heart symptoms with Thyrolar may need to stop the medication or have a reduction in dose.
Anxiety
The stimulating effects of Thyrolar can leave some patients feeling anxious. This can also lead to symptoms of depression and even insomnia. Patients may even notice they feel shaky or have a tremor in their hands. Anxiety may also be due to too much thyroid medication. Patients may require a reduction in dose.
Other Side Effects
Patients have also reported fatigue, lethargy, weight gain, hair loss, sweating, itching and headache with Thyrolar. These symptoms may be related to the thyroid medication but are not specific to the thyroid and could have many other causes. Anyone experiencing these symptoms while taking Thyrolar should contact their doctor.
