Purge toxins from your body through exercise. Begin by understanding the body systems that collect and eject toxins. Then understand the form of exercise that assists that purging system and choose which ones work for you and your lifestyle. Your body is designed to detoxify itself, so your efforts will assist this natural function.

Your Body's Cleansing Systems

Your body is a beautiful machine. It cleans itself internally every day. This internal cleansing is done through the respiratory system, through excretion and elimination, and through the exocrine glands. In every day language this means exhaling, urinating, having bowel movements, and sweating. Exercises can boost these functions.

Respiratory System

Increase your respiration through aerobic activity and assist the cilia in your lungs to lift unwanted particles up and out. Your lungs especially remove carbon dioxide that the blood stream transports away from other cells. All aerobic activity stimulates respiration. Pilates exercises are also highly desirable for detoxification because they involve a coordination of rhythmic movement and breathing. One specific exercise taught by Brooke Siler in her book, "The Pilates Body," is especially effective for the lungs. Sit tall with your legs straight out in a letter "v" and your arms raised to a letter "T." Inhale and initiate a right twist. Exhale as you hold the twist to the right. Inhale as you reverse the motion left. Exhale as you hold the twist left. Think of wringing out your lungs like a wet rag. Expand your lungs out to the sides like an accordion as you move across the front to promote deep lung breathing. Compress the ribs and lungs as you twist and purge old air. Repeat.

Kidneys, Bowels, and Sweat Glands

Use moderate exercise to stimulate your kidneys for transporting uric acid out. The last two detoxifying systems are your sweat glands and your bowels. They will actually build up in your intestine if you do not eliminate them regularly. Daily exercise encourages healthy bowel movement and elimination. Perform any aerobic activity for 20 to 30 minutes in order to sweat and aid digestion. Pilates, running, gardening and especially brisk walking help your body detoxify all systems. Make sure not to over do it.
