The onset of Parkinson's disease is typically gradual. It often begins with a tremor that may virtually go unnoticed. Although the symptoms of the disease vary from case to case, people with Parkinson's usually experience a freezing or slowing of movement as the disorder progresses. As time goes on, Parkinson's may restrict a person's ability to perform simple movements, such as reaching to shake someone's hand. The disorder often causes muscles in the neck and limbs to stiffen. At the present time, there is no cure for Parkinson's, but there are a variety of medications that can help relieve its symptoms. There are also some physical movements, including those performed in yoga, that may provide some comfort and help relieve the symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease.

Sedentary Lifestyle

The often disabling symptoms of Parkinson's disease can lead a sufferer to reduce or eliminate exercise. This lack of physical activity can further diminish muscle strength, balance and the flexibility of joints. Yoga practice can slowly guide the body into stretching positions only as far as the poses remains comfortable.

Physical Activity

Keeping the body physical active on a daily basis is important for everyone and especially people with Parkinson's and other neurological and muscular disorders. Physical activity can improve overall health as well as emotional well-being.

Yoga may be a perfect type of exercise for Parkinson's patients because of its gentle and slow movements. According to the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Society, yoga can help people with Parkinson's better manage and live with the disease. Additionally, the Parkinson's Hope Digest reports that a number of Parkinson' patients have reported diminished symptoms and improved motion and emotional spirits after taking yoga classes.

Stretching and Breathing

Since yoga involves stretching the body, this factor may help people with Parkinson's improve their mobility and range of motion. Some yoga classes that are designed for students with special needs, such as those with Parkinson's disease, incorporate balance training and gentle yoga poses, including back strengthening postures, shoulder movements and meditation. Yoga also stresses the importance of proper breathing techniques into its movements to enhance lung function.

Muscle Strength

The practice of yoga can improve muscle strength and increase mobility. Doctors sometimes recommend physical therapy that includes muscle strengthening exercises to get neglected muscles moving.

Yoga Effects

The various body poses that are performed in yoga will not stop the progression of Parkinson's disease from progressing, but it can lessen its symptoms and enhance both physical and mental strength. Yoga can have an uplifting emotional impact on people with Parkinson's. It is recommended that people talk to their doctor before starting a yoga practice or any other exercise routine.
