Pulled muscles can develop suddenly or occur slowly over time. Although they can affect any muscle in the body, the MedlinePlus website notes that the muscles in the back and hamstrings are commonly affected. Jazzercise combines elements of dance, strength training and stretching of these muscles. As with any exercise, it is important to understand how to avoid strains so that you will get the most benefit out of your Jazzercise sessions.
Symptoms
Pulled muscles can vary in severity from a mild ache to a debilitating pain. They can develop anywhere, including the muscles of the legs, abdomen, chest and arms. Symptoms can include pain, tenderness, bruising, redness, swelling, muscle spasms, warmth and limited or complete loss of mobility. A popping sound or sensation can sometimes also be felt or heard at the time of injury.
How it Occurs
A pulled muscle, also called a strain, typically develops when you run, suddenly change directions or forcefully exert the muscles during an exercise such as Jazzercise. In addition, pulled muscles can occur if you trip, fall or twist your ankle during your workout. Repetitive muscle motions, such as those in a Jazzercise routine, may lead to a strain if you do not properly warm up.
Treatment Options
Immobilize the injured area by wrapping it in an elastic wrap, brace, splint or sling. Hold an ice pack to the injured muscle or sit in an ice bath for about 20 minutes to help reduce inflammation, swelling and pain. If possible, elevate the pulled muscle above your heart to drain excess fluid away from the injury and treat symptoms. You can also control pain with an over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Severe sprains or ruptured muscles may require medical attention and surgery in extreme cases.
Prevention
Always warm up before any exercise, including a Jazzercise routine. Warming up your muscles with a 10-minute walk or light aerobic activity will make them stronger, more pliable and less likely to become injured during your workout. Cool down in the same fashion to help dispose of any metabolic byproducts of exercise. In addition, always wear supportive shoes that fit properly and cushion the impact of your workout for a safe Jazzercise session.
