Cholesterol is a substance found in the body that is directly linked to heart health. High cholesterol levels, often caused by an excessive saturated fat intake, can lead to life-threatening heart conditions.
Blood Cholesterol Levels
Blood cholesterol levels should be monitored regularly to ensure optimal health. These levels are measured in milligrams/deciliter.
High Total Cholesterol
The American Heart Association considers a total blood cholesterol level of more than 240 mg/dL to be high, putting you at double the risk of coronary heart disease.
Borderline High Total Cholesterol
The AHA lists borderline high total cholesterol levels between 200 and 239 mg/dL.
High LDL Cholesterol
Unhealthy LDL cholesterol is considered high when it reaches 160 mg/dL. Optimal levels are below 100 mg/dL.
Low HDL Cholesterol
Healthy HDL cholesterol helps to reduce risk of heart disease when it sits above 60 mg/dL. Levels under 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women are a heart disease risk factor.
