Elliptical trainers can be highly effective in helping you reach your fitness goals, whether you are looking to lose fat or improve your general fitness and conditioning level. Ellipticals provide an aerobic workout similar to running, but they are easier on your joints and do not jar your legs with hard impacts, making them quite appropriate for older fitness enthusiasts. Many different companies produce ellipticals; each offers slightly different features.

Precor

Precor is a fitness equipment company that offers ellipticals, bikes, treadmills and other types of exercise equipment. Founded in 1980, the company introduced the first cushioned treadmill 10 years later. In addition to producing fitness equipment for personal use, Precor produces commercial exercise equipment for hotels, gyms and spas. Precor manufactures 11 models of elliptical for personal use. Precor's ellipticals vary in the number of programs available, options for moving or fixed handlebars, and angle of ramp incline.

LifeFitness

LifeFitness produces five models of elliptical trainers. In addition to offering these trainers, LifeFitness produces exercise bikes, treadmills and summit trainers, a type of stair-stepper. LifeFitness also produces home gyms for strength-training workouts. The elliptical machines offered by LifeFitness differ by length of warranty, stride length, user weight limit and pedal size.

ProForm

ProForm is a fitness equipment company known for foldaway fitness equipment. ProForm offers nine different models of elliptical trainers in addition to incline trainers, strength-training equipment and fitness accessories. ProForm's ellipticals vary by weight capacity, stride length, ramp angle and the availability of iFit Live workout programs.

NordicTrack

NordicTrack made its first notable entry into the fitness world with NordicTrack skiers, but the company now manufactures a wide variety of exercise equipment, including elliptical trainers. The company produces 12 models of elliptical trainers in addition to treadmills, exercise bikes, incline trainers, skiers, striders and strength equipment. NordicTrack machines vary by length of warranty, maximum user weight, stride length and iFit live capabilities.
