Stretching first thing in the morning is one of the best tricks to get your blood flowing, increase energy and prepare your muscles to go to work, according to FitnessTipsforLife.com. Calf stretches are especially helpful because many people get calf cramps while they're sleeping for a variety of reasons, such as muscle fatigue, dehydration, medication side effects and hormonal imbalances, to name a few. Calf stretches not only help occasionally help with sudden cramping, they help prevent future ones by improving the flexibility and range of motion for calf and lower leg muscles, according to Home-Remedies-For-You.com.

Standing Calf Stretch

By flexing your foot and pointing your toes upward, you can stretch out your calf muscles. Bend one knee and stretch the other leg straight in front of you; point the toes on your extended foot toward your body and press your palms into the bent knee, leaning in to the stretch, according to The Stretching Institute. Hold the position for 20 seconds and then switch legs.

Standing Heel-back Calf Stretch

Stand in a backwards lunge position, with one leg extended behind you and your heel pressed into the ground. Bend your other knee slightly to feel the stretch extend through your calf. Hold the position for 20 seconds and then switch legs, according to The Stretching Institute.

Leaning Heel-back Calf Stretch

Stand facing a wall and press your palms into it while stepping as far back on one leg as possible. Press your heels and toes into the ground to stretch out your calf. Hold the stretch for 20 seconds, and then switch legs.

Toe Points

Toe points are a good stretch to do immediately after waking up. While lying on your back, extend your legs straight in front of you. Slowly point your toes away from the body, pause for a moment, and then point them toward the ceiling. Repeat this three to five times.
