How to Fast on a Detoxification Diet

Detoxifying your organs has many benefits. Among these benefits are removing toxins from your organs and skin, weight loss, increased energy and mental alertness. There are many detox programs out there to follow, however a majority of these programs suggest periods of fasting to jump start the detoxification process.

Step 1

Drink plenty of water. Water will flush out your organs of damaging bacteria and other toxins. To do this, a one- to three-day fast of nothing but water with lemon slices is required. Upon waking, drink a full 8-oz. glass of water with two lemon slices. Supplements can be taken with your water, such as extra fiber or a multivitamin.

Step 2

Make fresh juices from carrots, bananas, mango, pineapple or oranges. Any fruit or vegetable can be used to make your own healthy fruit juice. Blend your ingredients in a blender and pour in an 8-oz. glass. Do not add sugar, but you may add pectin to your juice to sweeten it. Most fruits are naturally sweet and do not require additional sweetening. This can be done for lunch or snacks. Start adding juices on day two or three.

Step 3

Take in only raw foods. Raw vegetables, fruits and berries are best when fasting for detoxification. After your fast, you can add other ingredients such as brown or wild rice and seeds. The raw foods will help fight hunger pangs while pushing out the toxins. At suppertime you can opt for a large salad with balsamic vinagarette dressing or just munch on celery and carrots. Raw foods can be added to your fast on day three.

Step 4

Complete your fast. On day four, you can start adding almond butter, brown or wild rice, seeds and oils. Eating almond butter on celery or carrots for snacks, or adding seed or rice with salads will further help rid yourself of hunger pangs. You should have increased energy and mental alertness by now and may have even lost some weight in the process. Most detox programs last anywhere from seven to 14 days.
