At times called the ultimate form of calisthenics, Pilates is an excellent way to improve your fitness and health. Pilates can be a way for beginners and fitness experts alike to build strength, improve flexibility and improve your posture. Incorporating Pilates exercises into your fitness routine can help you gain the benefits that regular physical activity can provide.

About

Joseph Pilates developed Pilates exercises in the early 1900s as a way to keep he and his fellow inmates in a World War I internment camp physically fit. Pilates exercises emphasize strengthening your abdominals, lower back, hips and thighs. Pilates exercises first caught on in the dance and performing arts community but now Pilates classes and techniques are available at most fitness centers and exercise studios. Learning proper Pilates techniques is one of the keys for building fitness and strength through Pilates exercises.

Benefits

According to KidsHealth.org, people who regularly participate in Pilates exercises report being less prone to injuries, feel improved posture and feel improved overall health. Pilates can also increase circulation, help sculpt and tone your muscles and strengthen your core. As with other types of physical activities, Pilates exercises can help reduce your risk for developing chronic diseases, improve your mental health and increase your chances of living healthier for longer.

Recommendations

The American College of Sports Medicine, or ACSM, recommends strength training exercises for your major muscle groups at least two times each week. Pilates exercises can help you meet this recommendation and also help you incorporate more flexibility exercises into your fitness routine. Being consistent with your Pilates routine can help you gain the benefits associated with physical activity and help you stay healthy.

Considerations

As with all types of physical activity and exercise, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program if you have been sedentary or have a condition that may make exercise unsafe for you. Taking a Pilates class at your local gym, health club or recreation center from a qualified instructor may be a good way to learn correct Pilates exercises and techniques. Choosing activities and exercises that you enjoy, including Pilates, can help you stay consistent with your exercise routine.
