Population Density

Wildlife
There have been several instances of aquatic animals swimming close to the shores of North Topsail Island. Dolphins and turtles are frequent, and a shark attacked a teenage girl in 2010. An encounter with any wild animal can be dangerous, so use caution: never swim at dawn or dusk, and always swim with a friend who can assist you in the event of an emergency.
Fishermen and Piers
Fishing is a popular pastime of many North Topsail Island tourists. Fishermen usually begin casting lines in the early evening, so plan to swim in the late morning or early afternoon to avoid their hooks. Additionally, North Topsail Beach is home to the SeaView Fishing Pier, and swimming near the pier is both prohibited and highly dangerous because of fishing lures and the pillars that support the pier. Do not attempt to swim near any pier at any time.
