1. One Powerful Pose
Yoga was developed by adapting the qualities and characteristics found in nature and wildlife into a physical and mental routine. In Sanskrit, simha means "the powerful one," while asana means "posture" or "pose." Simhasana, or the lion pose, is a unique yoga posture which invokes inner strength and courage while strengthening the vocal chords, facial muscles, the neck and upper back.
2. Pounce and Roar
Depending on your level of flexibility, this yoga posture can be performed while kneeling, sitting with crossed legs or in the Padmasana or the lotus pose. Sit on a comfortable mat or a folded blanket to protect your knees and hips. Pounce like a lion, moving your body forward as you place your palms with fingers spread on your knees or on the floor in front of your knees if flexibility allows. Open your chest as you tighten your buttocks, tucking your tailbone in. Roar like a lion, opening your mouth and sticking out your tongue. Look up towards the ceiling just with your eyes and roar as you exhale. Release the pose after one full breath, release and repeat 2 or 3 times.
3. The King of Colds and Flu
In addition to soothing problems such as lock jaw and teeth grinding, the lion pose is thought to help relax the muscles of the neck and jaw, easing the pain of a sore throat and soothing a cough during bouts of cold and flu. This yoga posture can further ease cold and flu symptoms by helping drain the nasal passages and expelling mucus from the lungs during the lion's roar.
4. A Natural Facelift
The lion pose works almost all of the muscles of the face, strengthening the neck, tongue, jaw, eyelids, forehead and more. Because of the unique actions of the posture, the lion pose is often called a natural facelift and is said to help eliminate and prevent wrinkles, lift the cheeks and smooth the forehead. Practice the lion pose daily to keep your face looking beautiful and youthful.
5. A Lion's Pose for Everyone
Because this yoga posture is traditionally practiced in a seated position on the floor, it can be difficult for those who have trouble getting up and down, those with knee problems or other physical restrictions. Furthermore, because this posture can help restore your natural beauty, you may want to practice the lion pose multiple times throughout the day while going about your regular activities. You can get similar facial benefits by performing the yoga pose while standing. Simply stand with your feet about hip width apart and rest your hands with fingers spread on your upper thighs. Lean forward to perform the posture, following the exact same instructions for the seated pose.
