Hand to hand baseball drills are designed to improve your fielding technique and your throwing accuracy. While many of these drills focus on improving your defensive skill, hand to hand baseball drills can also improve your bat speed and hitting skills. Hand to hand baseball drills range from soft-toss drills to speed pepper drills.
Countdown Drill
This hand to hand baseball drill must be performed with a partner and works on improving your throwing speed and accuracy. Stand 20 feet away from a partner and have your coach countdown from 30 to zero. During his countdown, make accurate throws back and forth to each other as accurately as possible. The player left with the ball when your coach reaches zero loses the drill. Throwing the ball as quickly as possible increases your chances of not being left with the ball.
Soft Hands Drill
This hand to hand drill is designed to improve the speed of your hands and your finesse in the field. Stand in a defensive stance in the field and wait for your coach to either toss or roll you a ground ball. Instead of wearing a glove, use your bare hands or a soft hand fielding tool to catch the ball. A soft hand tool is a soft piece of plastic that you wear like a glove. Unlike a glove, the foam forces your hands to "give" when catching the ball. Field as many balls as you can in a row before stopping.
Back Hand Fielding Drill
This baseball drill will improve your ability to field the ball to your backhand side. Stand in your defensive stance with your knees slightly bent and your hands in front of your body. Have your coach hit or throw 10 ground balls to your backhand side. As soon as you see the ball move to your weak side, rotate your torso and run toward your weak side. If you can get your body in front of the ball, field it in this position. If the ball is too far away, reach your arm out in front of you and extend to your weak side to field the ball. After fielding it, throw the ball to the first baseman to complete the drill.
Top Hand Hitting Drill
This baseball drill will improve your swing by focusing on just your top hand. Grab a bat and get into your normal batting stance. From here, remove your bottom hand, holding the bat with only your top hand. Have your coach stand at your side and throw you balls using an underhand motion. As the ball enters the strike zone, chop down on the ball like a tomahawk and follow all the way through. Hit as many balls as you can until fatigued.
