If you have been dedicated to your workout program in anticipation of bathing suit weather, you may want to continue your workout throughout the summer months. Warmer weather and longer days can take your exercise routines out of the four gym walls and into the fresh air. Whether you participate in physical activity on your own or in a group setting, you can find a summer workout plan to fit your needs.
Group Exercise
Group exercise classes can be taken outdoors during the summer months. You may find your local parks and recreation center offering boot camp classes in which you walk, run, use sports stadiums for stair running, and perform pushups, pullups, squats and other body strengthening exercises. Your local yoga studio may offer yoga in the park or on the beach as a summer alternative. A group cycling class may take its stationary bikes outside for a variation. Outdoor pools may offer aqua aerobics, where you can enjoy fresh air and a challenging exercise class.
Sports
Summer sporting programs are available for school-aged athletes. Many teams practice throughout the summer months to prepare for fall competitions. You can find basketball players indoors and outdoors, soccer and football players on outdoor fields and track athletes running around town and on the stadium track. These present opportunities for workout variation ideas. Practice soccer ball dribbling or running sprints for a workout and to learn new skills.
Training
Many triathlon races occur during the summer months. A triathlon involves three events: swimming, cycling and running. You can train for these events during the summer in preparation for your race. If a full triathlon does not feel within your reach, a sprint, or a half-triathlon may be an alternative goal. Your local running or cycling club may have group training opportunities where you can learn tips from previous event competitors and find support and motivation.
Individual
If a group workout or sports training do not fit into your schedule, you may want to vary your personal summer workout. Your body needs a change from the same exercises, so the summer months may be a chance for you to participate in a different exercise activity. If you live near lakes, you may want to try kayaking or canoeing. If you live near the mountains, you may want to try hiking or rock climbing for a workout alternative. The summer months pass quickly and once fall arrives, you may wish you had tried that new outdoor activity when the weather was warm.
