Football is much more than gigantic linemen crashing into one another and a quarterback heaving the ball down the field. Speed, footwork and agility are an aspect of every position on a football field. Running through regular drills to improve your footwork and speed is important to play your position to the best of your ability. Using cones for speed drills is one way to make you faster.
Shuttle Drill
The Shuttle Drill consists of positioning four cones five yards away from one another. It is a sprint drill emphasizing quick starts and stops. Use the first cone as your starting point. Sprint to each cone and back to the start, beginning with cone No. 2. Touch the ground beside each cone when you reach it and sprint all the way back through the first cone after reaching cone No. 4.
Zig Zag Drill
The Zig Zag Drill works on change of direction by requiring you to dart back and forth between two lines of cones. Place two lines of between six and eight cones parallel to one another and five yards apart. Place the first cone in the second line roughly 2½ yards farther down the field than the first cone in the first line so they are staggered. Starting at the first cone of the first line, sprint straight to the first cone in the second line. Touch the cone and sprint to the second cone in the first line. Continue to zig zag through the cones until you are finished with the course.
20-Yard Shuttle
The 20-Yard Shuttle Drill works on firing out of a three-point stance and sprinting to a target. Set two cones down on the field so they are 10 yards apart with a visible middle line between them. Begin in a three-point stance in the middle and sprint to the right to the first cone. Touch the cone with your right hand when you reach it. Turn and sprint to the other cone. Touch the second cone with your left hand and sprint back to the middle.
Three-Cone Drill
Place three cones five yards apart on the field in the shape of an "L." Start in a three-point stance at the first cone. Sprint to cone No. 2 and touch it with your right hand. Sprint back to the first cone, touching it with your right hand. Run back to cone No. 2, passing it around the outside. Weave inside the third cone, circle it, then sprint back around the second cone and return to the start.
