Triathlon combines swimming, biking and running into a single race. This requires the athlete to make several choices about equipment and clothing. Although bike and shoe selections are of primary concern, what a triathlete chooses to put next to his skin is as important.
Wetsuit
The swim takes place in a pool, lake, or ocean and is the first leg of the triathlon. If the water temperature is cold, usually below 78 degrees, the race committee will require wetsuits be worn by all triathletes for safety. Wetsuits designed for triathlon use differ from those used by surfers or divers. Triathlon wetsuits allow ample flexibility to accommodate the swim stroke, in addition to buoyancy, speed, and energy conservation.
Triathlon Race Suit
The triathlon suit is the race attire worn by most triathletes, made of nylon, Lycra, or a blend providing quick drying from water and perspiration. Worn throughout the entire race, the tri-suit saves the triathlete valuable time wasted having to change from one specific race kit to another for each phase of the race. Tri-race suits are available as one or two-piece kits, usually having several pockets to store nutrition such as gels, or other race necessities. In addition, tri-suits have a small, quick drying pad for the athletes rear end comfort on the bike leg of the race.
Cycling Helmet
Cycling is the second leg of a triathlon. All athletes are required to wear a certified helmet before they are allowed onto the cycling course. For most athletes, helmets designed primarily for safety are sufficient. Competitive amateur and professional athletes use helmets designed both for safety and for speed. The helmets are called aero helmets which, depending on the rider's ability, saves 30 seconds to two minutes over a distance of 25 miles.
Running Shoes
The run is the final leg of a triathlon. Although standard running shoes are used by competitors in a triathlon, several shoe manufacturers have created triathlon specific running shoes with features allowing athletes quick entry into their shoes, which saves time transitioning from the cycling to running leg. Shoes designed for triathlons can also have comfortable, sock-less inners worn without forming blisters during the race.
