The triathlon started in San Diego, California, in 1974, when a group of training partners organized an informal competition. Over time, triathlons have evolved into athletic events of various distances held all over the world. One of the shortest distances is a sprint triathlon that typically includes a 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 k run. The most famous sprint triathlons combine a rich heritage, high stakes for winning and a large number of competitors.
USAT Sprint National Championship
The USA sprint triathlon national championship gathers some of the best triathletes in America at a new location every year. With no qualification standards required to enter, the event includes a mix of beginning, intermediate and professional triathletes. The overall winner earns the opportunity to compete in the World Championships while the age group winners are crowned national champion. Along with the race, you receive a bag including items such as a water bottle, sticker, hat, shirt and race belt. Combining all of the race highlights and bonus features make the USA sprint triathlon national championship one of the most famous sprint triathlons.
Chicago Triathlon
The Chicago Triathlon is one of the world's largest triathlons, and it takes you on a tour of downtown Chicago. Additional triathletes will be competing in the international distance triathlon that adds to the overall excitement of the competitions. The race starts in the Monroe Street Harbor before moving onto Lake Shore Drive for the bike and finishing with a run that takes you past features such as the Yacht Club, Buckingham Fountain and Shedd Aquarium. After the race, you receive a free entry into the picnic-style post-race party featuring hot dogs and hamburgers.
Cornhusker State Games
The Cornhusker State Games is an annual competition that brings athletes from across Nebraska to compete in a variety of events, including a sprint triathlon. Held at Holmes Lake in Lincoln, the Cornhusker State Games sprint triathlon brings the best triathletes to the competition for their chance to qualify for The Best of the U.S. Triathlon with a first, second or third place finish. The team competition draws additional interest to the Cornhusker State Games because a group of athletes can specialize in a specific sport as one athlete is designated for each leg.
Hyannis Sprint Triathlon
Held along the shores of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, the Hyannis Sprint Triathlon is one of the longest-established sprint triathlons. Being only 90 minutes from Boston, the Hyannis Sprint Triathlon draws large crowds and a mix of professional and beginning triathletes. During the race, you swim in the Atlantic Ocean and then take a scenic route through Historic Osterville and Centerville before finishing with a flat run in Craigville.
