Turbo Jam is a set of exercise DVD's from Beachbody. Founded in 1998, Beachbody provides home-based fitness programs with online guides and support tools. The Turbo Jam series includes five workouts, as of 2011, geared towards strength building and cardiovascular exercise. Talk to your doctor before beginning this or any other fitness program to ensure you are strong enough for cardio exercise.
Turbo Jam Package
Turbo Jam consists of a series of DVD workouts designed to burn calories. The routines focus on 11 moves that Beachbody calls the "Elite 11.' The Turbo Jam website defines these as dance and martial arts moves. Each exercise targets a muscle group. This means by utilizing the Turbo Jam program, you work the upper and lower body plus the core all at once. The DVD trainer, Charlene Johnson, provides step-by-step instruction to learn the "Elite 11." The plan goes beyond just providing routines. You'll also receive flash cards for the moves, online support and a guidebook. As a bonus, Beachbody offers two additional DVDs and turbo sculpting gloves to increase resistance.
Benefits
The Turbo Jam workouts are high energy and designed to maximize calorie burn. One session that lasts 45 minutes can result in 700 burned calories. An extended workout that lasts an hour promises to burn 1,000 calories, according to the company website. Using Turbo Jam allows you to strengthen the vital muscles groups in one session. The program also provides sculpting workouts that will tone your body. Since the routines are built around just 11 moves, the programs should be easy to master.
Drawbacks
High-energy workouts may not be suitable for everyone. Those currently living sedentary lifestyles may find Turbo Jam overwhelming at first. Focus on learning the 11 moves initially. Once you have that down, workout for as long as you can and increase the duration over time. This program may stress your heart. If you have a medical problem or a history of cardiac illness, ask your doctor if Turbo Jam is right for you.
Expert Insight
The Turbo Jam website states that the program is clinically proven effective. They do not, however, present research data to substantiate this claim. If you are healthy, Turbo Jam will probably be a reasonable choice. A few schools, such as Gettysburg College, have incorporated the Turbo Jam system into their aerobics classes, indicating it is an effective approach to a well-rounded exercise program.
