If you are a runner, staying in your best shape at all times is important. Getting outside and running is one of the best ways to build up your stamina and keep muscles flexible. There may be times when you want to change your workout or experiment with different types of indoor fitness equipment. An exercise bike is a great way to help improve muscle tone and overall speed with your legs.

Strength Training

Strength training is vital part of getting your body in good shape for running. When you combine the aerobic exercise of bike riding, you are also strengthening your lower body, in particular your feet and legs. When you add more resistance to the exercise bike, your legs have to work harder, allowing them to build more muscle mass. A strong and powerful muscle mass is essential for a runner. Strength training on an exercise bike works the leg muscles with less impact than running. Because an exercise bike offers a runner a lower impact as opposed to the pavement --- exercise bike routines are often used by runners who have minor injuries and are in rehabilitation.

Endurance Training

The goal of running may include the length of the run or distance. Distance runners work hard to build up the cardiovascular system and lung function to endure several miles at a time. One way you can engage in endurance training is by using an exercise bike. An exercise bike can keep track of how many miles you have ridden and shows calories burned. Many exercise bikes include an air system that helps control resistance. This allows you to participate in interval training. Interval training involves high-intensity aerobic activity followed by a decrease in intensity to allow for a short rest during the course of your workout.

Muscle Flexibility

Keeping muscles from tightening up when you are running is essential in making your experience successful. If you do not do a lot of strength training or stretching between runs, you may find your muscles tensing up, making it more challenging to reach your goals. You can eliminate this by improving flexibility with an exercise bike. A stationary bike allows your leg muscles to stretch and move at the same time. A low-impact ride on your exercise bike can help improve your muscle flexibility when running.

Cardiovascular

Making sure your cardiovascular system is elite requires incorporating several exercises in your training regimen. Using either a recumbent bike or upright bike you can engage in aerobic activity that will improve your cardiovascular health and increase your endurance when running. A recumbent bike allows you to sit back in a comfortable seat with your legs and feet directly in front of you, unlike an upright where you are almost standing in an upright position --- similar to an elliptical trainer. A recumbent bike is good for low-impact training, and an upright offers a more vigorous workout on your legs and upper body.
