Exercising is the way to shape and strengthen your muscles, including those that make up your buttocks, otherwise known as your gluteal muscles. However, hectic lifestyles that require extensive travel or driving can keep you out of the gym. By performing a few simple exercises during your next trip, you can work your gluteal muscles without gym equipment.
Anatomy
According to the University of Arkansas Medical Center, your gluteal muscles are made up of nine individual muscles, including your gluteus maximus and minimus. These two muscles serve many different functions for your lower body, including joint stabilization, hip rotation and leg flexion and extension. Exercises involving these muscles can be done in a variety of positions, including while seated.
Contraction
One of the easiest and most effective ways to exercise your gluteal muscles while driving is to perform a voluntary muscle contraction, or a butt squeeze. While in the driver's seat, contract your gluteal muscles together by tightening your upper hamstrings and thighs. Hold this position for a few seconds before slowly releasing the hold and returning to a relaxed position. Repeat this contraction as often as comfort allows. You can even alternate contractions on either side of your gluteal muscles as an alternative.
Leg Extension
Another exercise you can complete to strengthen your gluteal muscles while driving is a simple leg extension. From your seated position, use your gluteal and thigh muscles on one leg to extend your shin at the knee joint. Hold this position for a few seconds before relaxing your leg and allowing your shin to lower. It is important to remember that you should not complete this exercise while actually pressing the gas pedal. To work on your right leg, you will need to wait until you stop or park the car.
Considerations
Exercising your gluteal muscles can be accomplished while driving, but you should always remember to take the appropriate precautions when you car is in motion. If you do not feel comfortable tensing or contracting your muscles while driving, wait to park before attempting any exercise. Allow for periods of rest while exercising as a way to allow your muscles to recover.
