Side Effects of Agrylin

Anagrelide is the generic name for Agrylin, a medication taken in capsule form to help lower the blood clot risk. People who have an excess of platelets in their blood run the risk of blood clots, which can cause strokes, heart attacks and other maladies. The medication may be used in children or adults, usually at 0.5 milligrams per capsule for a prescribed length of time. The dose may increase on a physician's orders.

Severe Side Effects

Agrylin may cause serious side effects in some people. The most severe potential side effects from Agrylin, according to the Mayo Clinic, include the type of symptoms generally associated with a myocardial infarction or heart attack. These may include shortness of breath, anxiety, severe pain in the chest, severe pressure in the chest, severe pain in the neck or jaw, cold sweats, severe pain in the arms or back, a rapid heartbeat or severe pressure in the arms, jaw, back or neck. Another serious side effect is a bodily weakness or headache that occurs suddenly and is severe. Call you physician immediately if you experience any of these.

Serious Side Effects

The use of Agrylin to fight blood clot formation also may cause or induce other serious side effects for which you may need medical attention according to your doctor's orders. These may include pain in the abdomen, abnormal tiredness, dizziness, abnormal bleeding, an irregular heartbeat, unusual bruising, bodily weakness, lower leg swelling, urination that includes blood, foot swelling, breathing difficulties, urination difficulties or pain, feeling faint, foot tingling or numbing and hand tingling or numbing.

Temporary Side Effects

Anagrelide also can be the cause of some temporary side effects that are not serious. These types need only be mentioned to a doctor if they persist. The more common types are pain throughout the body, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach bloating or gas and headaches. Fewer people experience the other temporary effects of light sensitivity, pain in the back, sleeping difficulties, canker sores, nasal congestion, confusion, a runny nose, constipation, drowsiness, fever, a rash on the skin, chills, itching, a feeling of general illness, ear noises such as ringing, pain in the joints, nervousness, cramps in the leg muscles, pain in the muscles, decreased appetite and depression.
