Enpresse is one of the brand names for the combination of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol. These two drugs, when used together, have the ability to inhibit ovulation and disrupt the menstrual cycle. For this reason, they can be used for hormonal birth control, because women cannot become pregnant without ovulation. Enpresse also changes the mucus in the cervix and the uterine lining to help prevent pregnancy.
Common Side Effects
Almost all prescription medications cause some side effects, and Enpresse is no exception. The most common side effects, according to Drugs.com, are fairly mild. They include problems with the gastrointestinal system, leading to mild nausea, cramps or vomiting. Enpresse can also cause your breasts to become tender, sore or swollen. Other adverse effects associated with Enpresse use include vaginal itching or burning, sometimes with a vaginal discharge, and changes in your menstrual period and libido. Enpresse can also lead to freckling or darkening of the skin on your face as well as increased hair growth--which can be coupled with loss of scalp hair. These side effects may be uncomfortable but do not require medical attention unless they become unbearable.
Allergic Side Effects
The immune system sometimes reacts with foreign molecules, such as those found in medications, leading to an allergic reaction. Side effects that relate to being allergic to Enpresse include the development of an itchy or red rash, sometimes combined with hives. More severe allergic reactions can cause swelling of the face, tongue and lips, as well as the extremities. In the most severe cases, allergies to Enpresse can cause trouble breathing and/or swallowing, as well as tightness in the chest and hoarseness. Allergic reactions can be life-threatening, so if you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking Enpresse immediately and contact your doctor.
Serious Side Effects
Although rare, there are some extremely serious side effects that can be caused by Enpresse. Medline warns that most of these serious adverse effects relate to the fact that Enpresse can cause blood clots, leading to a heart attack--which will cause a crushing chest pain that may radiate into your left shoulder and arm--or a stroke--which can cause weakness or numbness on one side of your body. Enpresse can also cause migraines to become more frequent or severe, as well as lead to painful headaches that can be accompanied by confusion and problems with speech, balance or vision. Another serious adverse effect is liver failure, which can cause yellowing of the skin and eyes, also called jaundice, as well as severe abdominal pain and easy bruising/bleeding. Stop taking Enpresse if you have any of these symptoms and seek immediate medical attention.
