5 Things You Need to Know About Electrolysis

1. Zapping Unwanted Hair

Electrolysis, when performed correctly, is one of the most effective forms of permanent hair removal. During a session, a small probe is inserted into a hair follicle and then energy is applied to the follicle in order to destroy the growth center. In more than 90 percent of cases, the hair will never grow back. Once the growth center has been destroyed, the existing hair is removed with forceps or tweezers once and for all.

2. Heredity, Hormones and Hair

If you are considering electrolysis, you know how frustrating it can be to have hair growing in the "wrong" places. Excess body hair on the lip or chin, or even the hands, arms or belly are common complaints from women and while natural, hair growth is often undesirable. Excess hair growth can be the result of many causes, including heredity or hormones gone awry. Additionally, some prescription medications or even illnesses can overstimulate hair growth.

3. A Series of Treatments for Permanent Hair Removal

Electrolysis is not a rapid miracle cure for unwanted hair and will require multiple sessions over a long period of time. The number of sessions you need will depend on your hair type and where you are working to remove the hair; however, once your treatment has finished you are done for life. Most cosmetologists will recommend weekly sessions which last 15 to 30 minutes. If performed by a trained and certified professional, there are no long-term side effects of electrolysis. While it may cause some reddening and skin irritation, the skin should clear in a day or two after the session.

4. Separating Myths From Truth

The largest myth about electrolysis is that it is completely painless. In generally, when well performed, discomfort should be minimal; however, it can cause a slightly painful, tingling sensation. Often a topical anesthetic is applied to make the session more comfortable. Additionally, electrolysis is only permanent about 90 percent of the time when performed correctly. Some people do experience some regrowth of hair. Finally, electric tweezers are not the same as electrolysis and will not offer the same results.

5. Bringing the Technology Home

With the growing popularity and amazing results of professional electrolysis treatments, home electrolysis kits have become available. However, home electrolysis can be extremely difficult and if performed incorrectly can cause pain, scarring and other problems. As tempting as it may be to perform electrolysis in the comfort of your own home, it is better for your health and your skin to let the professionals do what they know best.
