Probiotics and Microflora

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are beneficial to your digestive health. Your gastrointestinal tract is colonized by numerous species of microbes, which are normal intestinal microflora. The purpose of taking probiotic supplments is to replace possible harmful microbes from our microflora with more beneficial bacteria. Common probiotic bacterial strains includes species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.

Ingredients in Bio-Kult Probiotics

Protexin manufactures a multistrain probiotic product, Bio-Kult, that contains 14 bacterial strains, including L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. casei, L. rhamnosus, B. breve, B. longum and Streptococcus thermophilus. The company makes another version of the product, Bio-Kult Candea, which contains fewer seven bacterial strains and incorporates garlic and grapefruit seed extract; this product is marketed to strengthen your natural defense against overgrowth of the Candida fungus, as well as fortify you with beneficial microflora. Both products contain cellulose and trace amounts of soya and milk products. However, they are suitable for people with lactose intolerance.

Ingredients in Balance and Protect Probiotics

Protexin Balance+ and Protect probiotics contain seven bacterial strains. Balance+ includes vitamins A, C and E and is designed for people aged 50 and older to boost their immune systems and natural microflora. Protect contains higher levels of the seven bacterial strains and includes garlic concentrate, fructooligosaccharide, magnesium stearate and cellulose. Protect is designed to be taken during a shorter time period, such as during antibiotic treatment or travel or when you need an extra-strength probiotic product.

Ingredients in Restore and Vitality Probiotics

Restore probiotic is designed for babies and very young children to restore healthy intestinal flora. Restore contains seven bacterial strains: L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. casei, L. rhamnosus, B. breve, S. thermophilus and the infant-specific B. infantis. In addition, Restore contains fructooligosaccharide, a prebiotic. Vitality is designed for children aged 4 and older; it contains seven bacterial strains, as well as vitamin C, sorbitol, citric acid, magnesium, cellulose and orange and vanilla flavoring.

Conditions to Treat with Probiotics

According to "The Clinical Use of Probiotics," a publication of Probiotics International, probiotics can decrease the severity and duration of diarrhea caused by viral infections, including rotavirus infections. Probiotics may help to reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections but may kill both harmful and beneficial gut microflora, leading to diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Treatment with probiotics can help to restore normal microflora during the antibiotic regimen. Probiotic treatment has been indicated for conditions such as lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and ulcerative colitis.
