In volleyball, the net divides the court into two equal sides, each measuring 29 feet, 6 inches long by 29 feet, 6 inches wide. Each team occupies one side of the court. After the serve, teams attempt to win points by returning the ball over the net in three hits or fewer. USA Volleyball, the sport's governing organization in the United States, follows all International Federation of Volleyball rules regarding player contact with the net.

The Net

For men's competition, the net measures 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches tall, and for women's competition, the net measures 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches tall. The net consists of an even black mesh with white canvas bands along the sides, and antennae on either side that extend 32 inches above the top of the net.

Touching the Net

Players may legally touch the net as long as they do not interfere with play, according to USAV and FIVB rules. Players may also touch the net's posts, ropes and other components provided they do not interfere with play.

Reaching Over or Under the Net

Blockers may contact the ball beyond the net provided they do not interfere with an opponent's hit. Attackers may reach beyond the net after a hit as long as they contacted the ball on their side of the net. Players may penetrate under the net as long as they do not interfere with opponents' play. If a player puts his feet under the net, however, some part of the foot must maintain contact with the center line or remain directly above the center line.

Faults at the Net

If a player at the net interferes with an opponent's play while reaching over or penetrating under the net, she commits a fault and her team loses the point. If a player interferes with an opponent's play by touching the top of the net or antenna, supporting himself with the net or reaching into the net, he commits a fault and his team loses the point.
