Ankle pain can be caused by a variety of factors, from sprains to joint issues. Though swimming is generally a low-impact form of exercise, it can cause pain in the ankle under certain conditions. The key to eliminating your ankle pain while swimming is to determine what's causing it and adjusting your methods accordingly.
Overworked Joint
If you swim often or competitively, your ankle pain might be the result of overworked joints. Kicking repetitively could put strain on the ankle, especially if you kick with just your ankles and not from the knees. Though joint pain is more common in the knees and shoulders, it can happen in the ankle.
Poor Positioning
How you position your feet when pushing off the wall when doing flip turns also could be the source of your ankle pain. If the impact of your foot hitting the wall is not balanced, you could strain your ankle or even twist it. Make sure your feet hit the wall evenly, with the impact beginning from the ball of your foot then moving down to the heel to prevent muscle strain.
Ankle Supports
To prevent injuring your ankles further and to prevent your pain from reoccurring, you can wear ankle supports while in the pool. Waterproof ones are best, of course. Both braces and tape will work. Wrap your ankle before getting in the pool and be mindful of your stroke and kicking techniques to prevent further injury
Pool-Based Rehabilitation
Even though swimming caused your ankle pain, you can use water therapy to treat it. Now, swimming laps won't remedy your problem, but gentle pool-based exercises can increase ankle strength and flexibility without putting as much stress on the joint. Walking in the water and even flexing your ankle can increase your range of motion. If these actions cause you additional pain, see your physician to rule out severe sprains or tears.
