Running, kicking, tackling and breaking tackles can wreak havoc on the ankles of a football player. Football players are likely to sustain ankle sprains and fractures. As a result of returning to the game too quickly following injury, football players are susceptible to chronic ankle pain and instability. Many football players choose to use wraps in the form of braces or athletic taping to add support to their ankles.

Ankle Taping

Taping an ankle with athletic tape --- an elastic, adhesive bandage --- can help to restrict the range of motion in your ankle and provide added support as you move along the football field. Ankle taping can help players to prevent injury and recurring injuries. Athletic tape helps to support the muscles and ligaments of your ankle and lower leg, which can prevent the ankle from turning inward while jumping or running. Ankle taping can loosen up while a player is active and may require constant retaping.

Elastic Ankle Brace

An elastic ankle brace is a soft, lightweight sleeve that slides up over the foot onto the ankle. This brace provides the least amount of support of all available ankle braces. An elastic brace can fit easily into the shoe of a football player. It is commonly used to provide minimal support, treat ankle or foot tendinitis, and reduce swelling and ankle pain. An elastic ankle wrap may also be referred to as a compression bandage.

Lace-up Ankle Brace

A lace-up ankle brace is the most common type of ankle brace available. They are made of Velcro and a soft, pliable material. These braces offer moderate support for ankle instability and pain. Lace-up ankle braces are not restraining and are designed for functional use in sports, during work or when completing daily tasks. This brace can fit easily into an athletic shoe.

Hinge Ankle Braces

Hinge ankle braces are made of very rigid materials --- such as plastic --- with padding to support the ankle. There is a hinge at the bottom of the brace that allows for nearly full up and down movement of the ankle. This brace is designed for maximal protection but can fit into a shoe. Football players may use this type of protection when returning from an injury. The outer protective shell helps to guard the ankle from the impact of football participation. The maximal function level of this brace allows for full participation in football.
