Many families find themselves on a tight budget due to overspending or someone in the family losing a job. There are many ways that you can stretch a dollar so you don't have to go into debt. Instead of concentrating on things that you don't have, start thinking about all things you do have and how you can use them in new and inventive ways. Look for ways you can reduce costs, like reducing your grocery bill, entertainment costs and transportation costs.
Step 1
Know how much money is coming into the household and how much needs to be spent on all bills, including mortgage payments, utilizes and groceries each month. How much money is left over? That's the amount you can spend toward unnecessary purchases. Try to put a little bit toward savings as well.
Step 2
Save money on food by planning your meals each week. Sit down on Saturday or Sunday and compile a grocery list. When you get to the store, stick with the ingredients on that list. Stop eating out. If you indulge in alcohol, cut back, because a bottle of wine or a case of beer could be the cost of a healthy meal.
Step 3
Cut your entertainment costs. If you pay for a premium TV package and high-speed Internet, canceling or reducing those packages could save you $100 a month or more. Instead of watching TV, have game night with your family and pull out the board games that are gathering dust. Show your kids how to make fun crafts using inexpensive items.
Step 4
Pay your bills on time. When you don't pay your bills when they're due, you can find yourself with extra fees. For example, some cell phone companies charge a $30 reactivation fee when you don't pay your cell phone bill and they cut it off. If you do this even six times a year, you're wasting $180.
Step 5
Save money on transportation. If you have more than two cars and are able to sell one, do it. You'll get money that you can put toward savings and save money on insurance and repairs. Save money on gas by taking public transportation, riding a bike, or walking to work and to do errands.
Step 6
Do things as a family that don't cost very much money. Instead of going out and spending $5 per ice cream cone at an ice cream shop, buy a couple containers of ice cream, some toppings and chocolate sauce and make ice cream sundaes at home on Friday nights. Rent a movie instead of going to the movie theater. You can still have fun on a budget. You just have to get creative.
