Wearing the right workout clothes increases your chances for successfully following your fitness plan. Have at least a week's worth of gym outfits so that you can't use the excuse of not having clean clothes to wear. Buying clothes that you look good in will increase your confidence and make going to the gym more appealing. Look for clothes that are durable, comfortable and affordable.

Shoes

Having the proper shoes protects you from injury. Wear the right shoe for your type of workout. Running shoes are designed specifically for running or any activity where your foot is only moving in a straight line ahead. If you participate in activities such as aerobics classes or sports like basketball, you need aerobic shoes, cross trainers or basketball shoes. These shoes are designed to support your foot as it moves side-to-side and forward or backward. Replace your shoes frequently to make sure they don't wear out. Choose shoes with support and cushioning to make sure your foot is comfortable. Have a salesperson measure your foot at your local athletic store to ensure you have the right size. Some gyms require nonblack, nonmarking soles to protect their floors.

Pants or Shorts

Choose the length of bottoms you are most comfortable in whether it's full pants, shorts or somewhere in between. This decision is usually made based on how warm your legs get when you exercise and how comfortable you are showing your legs. Gyms are usually kept at slightly below room temperature. Often people that wear shorter shorts find that they ride up when running and moving. This may mean that they are too small. Make sure the leg openings are large enough and the shorts don't feel tight across your hips or thighs. Also make sure the inseam is not too long as saggy inseams also lead to bunching.

Tops

When choosing a top look, for something that is comfortable and flattering. If you feel uncomfortable and insecure wearing tight fitting tops, then choose a T-shirt. But, there are many flattering styles for all body types of fitted workout tops so try a few on at your local athletic store. If you sweat a lot, pick something that is breathable. Many men prefer tank tops or T-shirts with the sleeves cut off in order to let their upper bodies breath more. If you have an old T-shirt you can cut the sleeves and part of the sides off to allow more air to flow through. Check with your gym to see if there is a dress code and follow it. If you suffer from overheating while exercising, wear lightweight clothing that has plenty of room to let air in. This will help evaporate your sweat and cool your body.

Support

Sports bras are essential for women when doing an exercise that involves a great deal of jumping or jostling. Make sure your bra provides plenty of support and replace it when it wears out. This can take between three months to a year depending on how well you care for it and how often you use it. Men often rely on compression shorts for support when doing activities like running. These are worn under other shorts or pants. They are usually made of polyester and elastic and they wick moisture away.
